The (Scary) Future of Personal Training

We need to get real here for a second.

What is happening right now around the world with COVID-19 is not just going to blow over overnight.

This is going to be a long-term thing…

That means you are going to have to adapt your business or die.

Some fitness businesses will pivot and thrive throughout this period…

While others will fail to adapt and will not come out the other side…

What will you be?

This is as serious as it gets…

So, if you are a fitness professional with big, ambitious goals and you want to be able to continue focusing on your passion throughout this crazy period…

This maybe the most important post you will ever read.

Because the stark reality is this…

…a lot of fitness professionals will be going out and getting a 9-5 job before this all blows over…

That’s not good for anyone!

It’s not good for you, or the hundreds and thousands of people that would have gotten help from you, that didn’t, because you failed to adapt your business throughout this crisis.

If you are a serious fitness professional, you likely don’t want that to happen to you…

Spoiler Alert:  There’s BAD news and GOOD news. I’m going to show you how to avoid the mistakes that thousands of Fit Pro’s and Gym Owners have made over the past 6-12 months. And show you exactly what the most successful coaches are doing right now…

Now, let’s start with the bad news first and then we will get to the good stuff later…

It’s not all doom and gloom I promise, but you will need to make some changes if you want to thrive throughout the current climate…

Okay, let’s get stuck into this…

Here are the facts of the fitness industry…

  • 25-30% of independent gyms have closed down.

  • Facebook Ads have gone up over 400%

  • Organic reach on Facebook is down to 1-2%

  • Health and fitness has gone online and gym memberships are struggling.

  •  Wearable tech is up 163%

  •  Fitness apps are booming, and over 90% of them are free.

  •  Competition has exploded.  The online world has given people access to their fingertips to all the information.

  •  Pricing wars are fierce and cutthroat. Big companies pour dollars into advertising and get in front of the potential client.

  •  Google can be one of your allies or one of your biggest competitors.

It was April 16, 2018 I first posted the article talking about the shifts in the fitness industry, and how the next economic downturn is forecast to be in 1-2 years.

And RIGHT NOW the game is changing again… And this time it’s a big one.

You see, COVID-19 has changed the game for everyone…

As I said in the intro of this article, you either need to pivot and thrive, or you will not get out the other side of this…

That’s the first mindset shift you need to make…

You must be prepared to adapt your approach which includes adapting your marketing and how you bring in new clients and leads into your business…

Again, if you don’t do this, you won’t make it out the other side…

There’s an entirely new (and more effective) strategy for marketing to get new clients.

Sounds like BS… doesn’t it?

If you’re skeptical right now. I DON’T BLAME YOU.  There’s lots of one trick pony ‘business coaches’ trying to sell you on their one quick fix.

Just yesterday I shared what I’m about to walk you through, on a live coaching call with a big group of trainers and they’ve called this the “holy grail for coaches in 2020”.

These are super successful coaches and fitness professionals…

This is no theory.  This is the system that fitness professionals just like you all around the world are using to quickly grow their online business.

Not just that, these guys are doing 6 and 7 figures online.

This is powerful stuff and you can absolutely do the same for your business…

These coaches doing 6 and 7 figures are no smarter than you or me, they have just learned a few very important skills that help them scale their businesses fast…

Don’t just take my word for it…

Here are some examples below.

In fact, if you can implement this, this could be the catalyst for you this year…

Just see what some of them are saying when they use this system:

Dan to sell $12,500 Of Personal Training In ONE-Day.

Callum earns his FULL incomes in only 1.5 hours of work a week (and can travel anywhere in the world)…

See how Hasnain went from zero to $13,000 A Month…

Aaron to earn $82,000 just last month…

And, before you ask…

These results are right now, during the covid-19 pandemic….

So, if you think that people are not buying fitness stuff, or that people are not spending money or that they are prioritizing other things right now…

Then, you are dead wrong…

These guys also didn’t have a massive following on social media.

Want to learn how they did this?

Then, keep reading…

One of the big things these guys and girls are doing is that they are getting away from the time for money trap…

Tony Robbins once said…

“Trading time for money is one of the worst trades you will ever make in your life”…

Now, before we get into that…

I want to tell you a quick story…

This particular story is one of the reasons why I feel so passionately about getting out of the time for money trap.

This is why I quit Personal Training in the gym back in 2014.

From the outside looking in, I was “successful”.

I had a full book of clients, I was charging a premium rate, I had a team of trainers working for me.

But it was all a LIE.

I’ll be honest with you, I felt like a slave to my business…

I felt trapped!

I was working all the time, I was stressed to the max, I wasn’t spending much time with my family and I was seriously questioning whether this was all worth it…

I was actually earning over $100,000 which was a massive goal of mine when I was younger…

The passion for health and fitness started to literally fade right out of me day by day….

That’s because I was working all the time and was burnt out…

I actually considered sacking it all in and going to get a 9-5 job.

However, there was a big problem with my business…

I was stuck in the “time for money trap”.

There was only so many hours in the day and so many sessions I could do…

Therefore, my income was capped…

Training clients from 6am to 6pm, and not being able to spend time with my baby daughter was soul crushing.  And after years and years of working hard.  It was ultimately building a business that was in a broken model.

Especially with the pandemic going on right now, the PT model is broken more than ever…

There was a particular moment that changed everything for me…

It was certainly a tipping point and an eye opener for me.

It was one day when I was working in Dubai and I had promised I would spend some time with my daughter one evening…

However, because I got back so late after my last PT session, my daughter was already asleep before I got home…

That was a crushing moment for me.

What made it more painful was the fact that this was not a one-off thing.

This was happening most nights of the week.

I felt like a failure…

I felt like a bad father…

A bad husband…

And, most of all, I had let myself down as well…

This is why I clearly remember the day I decided to quit being PT and start my online business.

It was one of the scariest and one of the best days of my life.

And now you have one of the best reasons to make the same decision I did.

It’s strange how you look back at defining moments in your life…

And, this was certainly one of them.

I’m going to be brutally honest with you right now…

You MUST transition to the new model asap.

The new model isn’t just better in normal times…

It’s pretty much a mandatory requirement now because of what has been going on with COVID-19.

See, gyms have closed already…

Gyms will likely have to close again and again with more lockdowns because of more waves of the virus…

People are cancelling gym memberships because they don’t feel safe in a gym environment.

How can you rely on this model for making a predictable income?

You can’t!

It is as simple as that.

Now is one of the best times for you to make the switch from the ‘Old PT Model’ to the ‘New Generation PT Model’.

Where Is The Industry Headed..?

We work with hundreds of fit pro’s closely, and have thousands giving us regular feedback.

So, here is the BAD NEWS:

My forecast is that the next 12-18 months for gyms is going to be tough.

People are looking elsewhere to find other solutions for their health and fitness needs.

And that solution is clearly…. Online Coaching.

Even if you stick it out as an in-person PT.

You need to realize that with future lockdowns looming because of second waves, a lot of your clients will not be able to train with you in person anyway…

As mentioned at the beginning of this post, you must adapt and pivot otherwise you will not make it out the other side.

Personal training is just not sustainable in these uncertain times.

What I don’t want is for you to try to stick it out as an in-person personal trainer and then for you to have to go get a 9-5 job because you were doing something that just wasn’t sustainable.

If you’re still digging your head in the sand and hoping to get to the other side alive and going back to “normal”.

You’re doomed.

This is a big deal right now and you MUST adapt!

If you’re like most smart personal trainers and coaches.  You’ve tried to grow your business online already…

You’re likely confused with exactly what you should be doing to grow your business online…

You are likely overwhelmed with all the conflicting messages out there about the best way to grow your online fitness business…

You’ve likely seen a million different fitness business gurus claiming they have the MAGIC SOLUTION…

But…you know most of these gurus are filled with hot air and false promises.

You’ve probably tried posting on IG multiple times a day, Facebook ads, built sales funnels etc.

Perhaps you’ve tried direct messaging random people, setting up free challenges or you have been told to use your personal profile to grow your business…

You’ve likely tried modelling other fitness influencers and posting physique pics but all you got was a few followers and likes but no paying clients…

The other big issue is a lot of PT’s do not understand the goal and objective when it comes to marketing online…

If you are just starting out and getting going with this…

Then, you have one goal and objective…

What’s that you ask?

You need to build out a predictable and reliable system for generating new leads and clients…

I will be honest with you…

If you do not have this in place, then you don’t have a real business…

Harsh?

That’s the reality.

I will be honest with you, I did not have this in my old PT business.

I had a mentor to teach this to me….

It is not about how many followers or likes you get….

When you speak to your accountant or bank manager, they never ask you about followers, or likes…

They ask for sales…

And, there’s a big difference between marketing to get leads and ultimately high paying clients than just likes and followers.

This is the biggest mistake I see fitness pros making.

They’re using a broken model… a dead model that we call “the OLD PT Model”.

This is why I believe, that if you don’t keep up with the changes now, you could be left behind forever.

See, NONE of the other coaches or even myself focus on all these old-and-dead tactics.  Why? Because there is NO need.

But we’re still able to get amazing results like no one else because I’ve figured out a handful of strategies that actually get results.

In just a second, I’m going to walk you through what the new model looks like, and the 3-frameworks that you can simply set up to make it work.

The GOOD NEWS:

Making the switch to the New Model is a no-brainer when you look at the facts.

Your profit margins are MUCH higher, as running an online business has less expenses.

That is because you are not having to pay expensive gym or studio rent fees…

There are literally zero major expenses…

You are not limited by how many clients you can train in a day either…

Your income is not capped…

Not to mention that you won’t have issues with people cancelling their sessions at the last minute…

You can work from anywhere in the world. No longer are you tied down to rocking up to the gym at 5:50am to see your first client of the day.

You can work the times that you want.

Personally, for me I finish work by 12 midday everyday.

The rest of the day I train myself and spend with my family.

That’s right, you did read that correctly.

Imagine earning more, while working a lot less…

You set your working times, rather than being dictated to by when your clients are available…

You can easily earn 2-3X MORE than you are now, by working less hours.  And I’ll show you exactly how below.

You can impact 2 to 5 to 10X more people.  Training clients 1:1 or in small groups in a gym has you only being able to help a handful of people. With online coaching you can helps 100’s, to 1000’s with the same energy and effort.

Your lead costs are super cheap right now.  One of the best truths right now with online fitness coaching is that you can get leads really damn cheap.

You can scale your sales 5X as fast.  See, selling in-person coaching or gym members needs time and a good sales skill set.  Selling online fitness coaching with the model we use has you saving hours and hours each week, and is MUCH easier.

Your team is now small and powerful. I know, you know that when growing an in-person business can be soul crushing with high expenses and effort needed to manage your team.

We have multiple 6 to 7-figure businesses with a proven 3-4 person team.

The New Online Personal Training Business Plan

To make sense of what we are talking about, let’s break down the actual numbers of what’s typically involved in different business models.

First, the traditional Personal Training model you’ve been conditioned into subscribing to:

The Old PT Model:

Tier #1/1: Face to Face Training (Renting Space)

Hourly Rate: $70/hr

Number Of Clients: 15

Number Of Sessions/Week: 25

Number Of Extra Work Hours: 10-20

Monthly Revenue: $7000

COSTS:

Gym Rental Fee: $300/week ($1200/month)

45-55 hours per week

180-220 hours per month

Approximate Profits With Hours Worked:

=$5800/Month

Now, let’s compare it to…

The NEW PT Model:

Tier #1/3:  1-on-1 Online Coaching

Monthly Rate: $300

Number Of Clients: 30

Number Of 20min 1:1 Sessions/Week: 7-8 (2.5hrs)

Number Of Extra Work Hours: 10-15

Monthly Revenue: $9,000 /Month

Annual Income:

= $108,000

**You can work from anywhere in the world to coach your clients**

Tier #2/3: “The Holy Grail”

Online 1:1 Coaching — Monthly Rate: $397

Number Of Clients: 30

Online 1:Many Membership — Monthly Rate: $27 p/week.

Number Of Members: 250

Monthly Revenue: $27,000

Annual Income:

=$335,910

Whew. That’s a lot of numbers to digest.

Put simply, you can see how diversifying your skills and services not only has the potential to boost your income, it also allows you to leverage yourself.

With on-on-one online training, you are still capped by the number of people you can handle in a given month. This is fine – at least you can do it from literally anywhere in the world.

That issue is addressed when implementing the group and/or membership model. Things can run on a monthly recurring model, and done so in a way that would allow you to have hundreds of people paying for your services every month, if you so chose to grow it to such a place.

The other great benefit to this is how spread your income is…

I know many personal trainers have certain clients who have a lot more sessions than others…

Therefore, certain clients are worth a lot more to them than others.

That means if they lost these particular clients it would hurt a lot financially…

Whereas with the new model, the revenue is split across so many different clients…

You are not overly reliant on a small number of clients for most of your income…

This gives you enormous stability and a lot of peace of mind…

I remember as a PT that I was scared shitless that my current clients would leave…

Whereas, with the new model it doesn’t even matter if you lose any clients because your income is so spread across so many sources…

Not to mention that even if you did lose some, you have a system in place to generate leads and new clients like clockwork…

Again, you have the freedom to do this wherever you want in the world…

You will feel a million times happier with a model like this…

Instead of being scared people will leave, you will have peace of mind knowing you have other income sources and also systems to help fill the funnel with new clients…
